Tulip Hunting in the Netherlands by Bicycle: A 2026 Guide

They say the best way to see the Dutch tulips is by bike. They don't always mention the part where you’re dodging police, wrestling with train schedules, and accidentally racking up a €160 fine for checking your map. From the vibrant fields of Sassenheim to the cozy markets of Lisse, this was a day of pure color and some very expensive lessons. If you're planning your own 'Tulip Hunt' this year, here’s the raw, unedited truth on how to do it right—without the headache.

April is officially here, and with it, the iconic Dutch tulips! In the Netherlands, the tulip season typically peaks in mid-April and remains available until May 10, 2026 (the official closing day of the flower season).

Why Tulips? Why the Netherlands?

While tulips are now synonymous with the Dutch landscape, they actually originated in Central Asia and Turkey. They were brought here in the 16th century, sparking "Tulip Mania." Today, the sandy soil of the Bollenstreek (Bulb Region) provides the perfect drainage for these bulbs to thrive.

Inside Keukenhof: The Garden of Europe

You can definitely go inside Keukenhof to see the meticulously designed gardens.

  • 📍 Location: Stationsweg 166A, 2161 AM Lisse

  • Details: For 2026, tickets are €21.50 (online). Inside, you’ll find 7 million bulbs and indoor pavilions like the Juliana Pavilion and the Oranje Nassau Pavilion.

My Recommendation: Go "Tulip Hunting" by Bike

While the park is beautiful, I highly recommend renting a bicycle and doing a "Tulip Hunt" in the surrounding fields.

Official "Golden Spots" for your route:

  • The Windmill View: Cycle to the fields just behind Keukenhof (near the windmill) for that classic Dutch postcard photo.

  • The Tulip Barn (Hillegom): An official "selfie garden" where you are allowed to walk among the flowers.

  • Tulip Experience Amsterdam: A beautiful display garden with 1 million tulips and 500 different varieties.

  • Kasteel Keukenhof: The castle gardens are often quieter, free to enter, and very "Instagrammable."

Navigating the NS Bike Rules & Costs (2026)

  • The Bicycle Ticket (Fietskaart Dal): You must purchase this for €8.50. It’s valid for one day during off-peak hours only.

  • OV-fiets Rental: Renting the official NS bike costs €4.80 per 24 hours.

  • The Return Fee: If you return an OV-fiets to a different station than where you picked it up, there is a €10 surcharge.

  • Keukenhof Bike Rental: Renting at the Keukenhof entrance costs approximately €12.50 for 3 hours or €17.50 for the full day.

Note: You are not allowed to take an OV-fiets on the train. They are strictly for use starting from the station where you rent them (like Leiden or Sassenheim).

A €160 Lesson: Phones and Bicycles

Be careful! In 2026, the fine for holding a phone while cycling is strictly €160 (plus a €9 administration fee). A plainclothes officer can stop you anywhere. Use a phone holder or stop your bike completely before checking your map!

The Reward: Lisse and Beyond

The cycling from Leiden to Sassenheim was stunning. We finished the day in Lisse at the open market with some well-earned beers.

  • 📍 Market Location: Meer en Houtplein, Lisse (Weekly market on Mondays; special Flower Parade markets often happen on Kapelstraat/Kanaalstraat).
